Seguendo i passi dell'avaro un dì, un certo beccamorto sospettò dov'era il morto e lo diseppellì. Quando venne il vecchione e ritrovò vuoto il nido, per poco non morì. Chi mi sa dire i gemiti del nostro pover'uomo e chi le lagrime e l'ira onde si lacera le vesti a quell'orribile misfatto? - Il mio tesor m'hanno rubato, ahimè! - gridava il mentecatto. - Il tuo tesor? - un passeggier chiedé. - Il mio tesor ch'era sepolto qui sotto una pietra. - Tempo ora non è da seppellir il tuo tesor così. Io non avrei mai più toccato ciò che a stento si raccoglie e sparisce in un momento.
